Rubber plugs

By Garry Ristek at 2012-11-08 00:04:37
Rubber plugs are extensively used in many industrial, commercial and domestic applications. Due to the inherent properties possessed by rubber and rubber compounds like silicone etc, these plugs can perform a variety of functions. They are widely used in sealing applications, where they can stop liquids and gases from spilling or leaking out. Chemicals can also be stoppered with rubber plugs which provide excellent sealing if they are treated appropriately to withstand reaction to aggressive chemicals, liquids, solvents and acids. Holed or vented rubber stoppers can be used to release pressure build-up and avoid explosions and escape of gases or liquids under high pressure.

Sealing plugs can also be fitted to tubes and pipes to control and direct the flow of liquids and semi-solids in waste-management and water-supply systems, food and beverage industries (where silicone plugs are used because of their high level of purity and lack of strong odor and resistance to heat). Tapered plugs are generally used in this application as they provide a good fit, are easy to remove and install, they are non-staining and self-sealing. They may also be used in compressors. Sealing plugs may also be designed with tab ends for easy removal.

Silicone pull-plugs and flange plugs are designed with narrow tapered ends which can be pulled through both sides of a hole. They are highly resistant to heat, steam and pressure and can be used repeatedly if they're well maintained. These plugs are used in powder coating and paint-masking applications and they do not get contaminated by the paints so they can be re-used, making them cost-effective. The tapered design also makes them suitable for use in ports of different dimensions and since they are pliable and flexible, they provide a tight fit.

Other industrial and lab applications of rubber plugs are in carboy stoppers, test-tube and glass container stoppers, serum and pharmaceutical stoppers manufactured to fit standard lab-sized serum and vaccine bottles, which can then be finished with an aluminum seal.

Twist and pull rubber plugs are excellent for food industry applications and they can be easily removed. Generally, the material used may be a silicone compound as it has high levels of purity and non-reactivity.

Washer plugs are used when the hole is to be plugged but the surrounding area has to be masked, as in powder coating applications. These plugs are very durable and can be re-used several times as they do not get contaminated by the paints and solvents.

Based on your specific requirements, you can purchase the right design, color and dimension of rubber plugs directly from the manufacturers, based on their on-line catalogs. Customized solutions are also offered by many of them.
