Handles Knobs

By Garry Ristek at 2012-11-07 23:35:36
Handles and knobs are devices used to grip when you need to open or close doors, windows, cabinet or cellar doors, display shelves, boxes or drawers. They may or may not include locking devices and sometimes include a closing latch which is operated by a simple lever. The two terms are used interchangeably, but a knob often refers to a spherical structure while a handle is a linear one, either placed horizontally or vertically or sunk into the main structure. Its location on the door is usually very close to the edge so that locking devices can be attached through it to the door-frame. They are placed at a convenient height for people to access safely. In many homes, handles and knobs are placed beyond the reach of children to prevent accidental closure or opening. One issue with door-knobs is that they may not be very convenient for elderly persons or those with motor co-ordination difficulties to operate unless they are fitted with slip-proof sleeves to provide a tight grip. Hence handles which are lever-operated are preferred in public buildings.

Handles and knobs are used to give access, at the entrance of buildings, to provide privacy inside a building, for cabinets and passages and may also be dummy knobs or handles for purely decorative effect. Additionally, car-door handles may be recessed into the body of the car for a streamlined look, or may be flush with the surface as in aircraft baggage storage lofts, or be the foldable type as in balcony or windows.

Types of materials used for handles/knobs vary with the application. Wood is great for aesthetics but not very durable especially for outdoor applications. Metal handles are excellent for both aesthetics and functionality as they are tough, hard-wearing when treated with coatings, can be rust and corrosion resistant and also flame-retardant. However, metal handles need good maintenance and may not serve the purpose in environments where there is exposure to moisture, heat, aggressive chemicals, gases or solvents. They are great for textured and antique finishes and look very attractive when polished to a high shine. Plastic/rubber handles are excellent for durability, non-conductivity, resistance to damage by moisture, rust, heat/cold and most chemicals and solvents.

The design element is very strong in handles and knobs. Old-world porcelain knobs, brass and bronze, carved wooden, antique-finish metals and plastic provide a finishing touch to your interiors, while heavy-duty stainless steel, aluminum, plastics and plastic-compounds are functional and durable. Handles and knobs can be purchased from your local hardware store, or directly from the manufacturers. However, most manufacturers also do customized designs provided the order is large enough.
