Automobile chassis generally have plug holes which are essential so that both the exterior and interior surfaces can be painted and coated to prevent rust and corrosion. However, during the vehicle assembly, these plug holes must be stoppered otherwise moisture and other contaminants can enter the interior surface. Body plugs are devices used to fill in, plug or stop holes or openings within automotive bodies. The holes may be in truck floors or other automotive floors. They're also used to plug holes left in the manufacturing process, by previous repairs or holes through which wires and cables previously passed but are no longer required. These holes can become a channel for dirt, debris, moisture and contaminants to enter and damage the automotive body unless they are suitably plugged and stoppered. These plugs are also known as water plugs in the auto industry.

Another requirement that body plugs must fulfill is of resistance to high levels of heat during assembly and electrostatic painting and polishing. However, speed is also a factor in assembly lines, hence the use of metal or hard plastic plugs may involve tools. Keeping this factor in mind, auto body plugs are generally made of softer and more flexible polyethylene or polyester compounds which are also more cost-effective since they can be discarded after use.

Trunk and Floor Plugs: These are used to stop holes in the trunks and floors of vehicles so that water and dirt do not enter these areas. They help to prevent rusting and corrosion of the metallic floors and also help to keep these areas free of dampness. Body plugs are designed to fit neatly into holes made in sheet metal and keep the edges of the hole rust and corrosion free. In auto interiors, body plugs keep the insides of the vehicle looking neat and well-finished when plugs are used to cover assembly and access openings in windows, electronic parts and other items like mirrors and glove-compartments.

Button plugs: are used extensively in auto interiors to cover small holes. They can be fitted and removed easily by hand and replaced to fit snugly back once the work is done. They are snap-fit into place and held there by a bead fixture till they are intentionally removed. The material used is low-density polyethylene and they come in neutral shades like black so that they match with any type of interior décor in the vehicle. Button plugs may also come with flush-fit heads which provide a smooth streamlined finish. Other types include the ergonomic button plugs made of more pliable, soft thermoplastics designed for quick and convenient fitting and removal. Additionally, because of the flexible material used, these plugs can also fit holes of slightly different dimensions.
